Dimmbrá got diagnose chronic deform arthritis in hip joint in the summer of 2008. She received the maximum dose of medicine but were still in pain. We tried swim exercise at the veterinary clinic with their physiotherapist, also did acupuncture and tried different kind of medicine, Dimmbrá also got Cartrophen injections but nothing helped her. Her arthritis was too painful for her so we had to let her fall asleep. She was our first Icelandic, mother to our second, playful outside, calm and gentle indoors and my training companion. We miss her so very much, it is empty without her, our beloved Dimmbrá.
Dimmbrá is our first Icelandic sheepdog and comes from kennel
Ástvinur outside Borås, Gothenburg. She belongs to,
in Sweden, the rare family group J1. She has well-developed double
dewclaws which are desirable for the breed. She also have A-hips
and eyes ok. Her name is Icelandic and means "dark around the
eyes." I've trained some obedience and tracks with Dimmbrá.
Dimmbrá is Norwegian and Swedish beauty champion and International
Beauty Champion.
Dimmbrá is the mother of our A-litter
and B-litter.
Why did we get a Icelandic Sheepdog?
We had this idea: "Another dog could be cozy, a small little
wild thing that can liven up the house and bite break our stuff."
This was the summer of 2001. It was also a little now or never about
having another dog because we did not want Quinnie to suffer in
her old age of a little teaser.
Approximately in the same time as the idea of a dog was born we
met an Icelandic Sheepdog in town and I thought it looked just like
Quinnie except from a bit larger and with other colors. Curious
as I am, I had to take Tomas with me and ask the couple about their
dog. Everything that they told me about the dog matched so well
into Quinnie and the dog was really nice and sweet. When we got
home it was a large study on the web. The breed seemed quite wonderful
and we saw our Quinnie but larger and braver. The only drawback
was that the breed was considered barking. Anyway, we decided that
we could not have another dog of a lot of bad reasons. Some time
passed by and we talked every now and then about having one more
dog and finally had all our bad arguments fallen and we decided
to get a dog.
Immediately the question arose which breed it would be. Icelandic
Sheepdog was the first thing we thought of, but we didn't want to
lock ourselves before we had looked into all options so we could
be sure that we just then did the most appropriate choice. We wanted
a dog that was not so large. After all, it is more difficult with
a big dog when you are traveling, have someone to look after your
dog, and it would be nice if the puppy wasn't twice as big as Quinnie
when we get it. We also wanted a dog with long, soft, easy-fur.
I have an idea that longhaired dogs are better for eczema and it
is also easier to clean fur after a longhaired. We wanted the dog
to be intelligent and flexible so it would be suitable for training
obedience and agility. Although steady so that we could take long
walks and also practice track and stuff. Preferably a dog with attitude
and with some self-will and a dog without breed diseases, a healthy
breed. It leaned to some spitz dog but which one. We had ruled out
the Japanese spitz, we wanted a dog that is slightly larger than
Quinnie and most Japanese is considerably smaller than her. We decided,
it has to be an Icelandic Sheepdog. After talking with a kennel
by telephone who confirmed everything we had read about the breed,
the choice felt even safer.
Now we had decided which breed we should have and the time was
around Christmas 2002 and we got good contact with Kennel
Ástvinur and it was a lot of talking on the phone and
e-mail. I must say that Ulrika and Kent is really super nice people.
2003-03-25 Ástvinurs D-litter was born and then we finally
knew that we would get a little puppy.
